A Media Pact

First of all, I hereby promise that this will be the last post this week related to US congressional elections and US politics. Not because I’m one of those “lets not talk politics, it makes everyone upset” people… but rather because on this blog, I value the fact that the world is larger than just one country… plus its a personal blog.. so I could surely tell a story or two of interesting cultural learnings for make benefit of great internet.

Most of you probably don’t watch GW Bush press conferences. This because you value your mental health, time, ears, and intelligence. Watching him speak has been proven to put any of these at risk.
But I live in Amsterdam and things here are always in some sort of twilight zone, so I watch the press conferences… I guess because everyone has an unhealthy passtime.

So what I notice tonight, more than ever, is that exactly at a moment where the press should be asking tough questions and making this man explain all his vague promises and preminitions when it comes to the election, national issues, and the ever-so-vague “finish the mission” talk about Iraq…. instead of pressuring him to actually answer what the hell he has planned, they do the exact opposite. Throw the man softballs… and worst of all… and this one almost made me spit up my dinner all over innocent roomate: they joke with him!

Now I know some us like to joke on the job… hell I did.. when I had a job. But the relationship between media and president is not one of colleagues. They are monitors. Their role is to ensure he is doing his job, as leader of the country, properly and not misrepresenting or adopting policies that could prove detrimental. You know.. like sending thousands of people to their deaths.. that kind of thing.

A Media with such a role; acting as the fourth estate of checks and balances, would not be a media that shares inside jokes and winks and nudges with the president. They wouldn’t further allow the president to avoid doing his job or facing criticism by laughing at his jokes and responding with more jokes. That wouldn’t work very well, if they are to be a critical force that the president takes seriously.

But the fact is… they do this. They laugh it up. He calls them by their first names. He probably buys them booze, drugs, and sex like Nixon used to do for his campaign press.

My thought after once again seeing this sick and useless relationship… is an idea. A pact, if you will. The entire white house press core should take this oath.. make this pact.. for the good of the nation and to properly due their job as the fourth estate: promise to never ever laugh at the presidents’ joke during a press conference or an interview. Sure he’ll tell them often.. trying to avoid producing answers or revealing his dark secrets.. but the press should keep to this strict rule… and there should be dead silence anytime he tells one of his one line zingers. Dead silence! And wait for the president to answer the question.. or keep asking the same question if he tries to move on.

In my little imagination I can see it now… the great media stonewall… no more kidding around and laughing it up. Just watchdogs.. reporters… investigators.. who can joke around once the job is done and the president has gone back to his lonely corner.

Thats what I’d like. Just a little wish.

Dare to Debate

For me, the most annoying part about listening to American politicians talk about the world, is when they decide everything is linked to Iran. It’s ponderous… a relatively small country in the world, yet everything bad somehow originates from there.. according to Us politicians regardless of which of the 2 twin parties they belong to.

While riding through fairly sunny Amsterdam en route from work, I once again had a fit of cursing and could barely focus on pedaling, as I listened to Santorum debate Casey, as both men are running for senate in Pennsylvania. You’d think that a love fest where two men profess how much they agree with each other and how they both believe the same things, that should be a lovely and touching occasion. Not so. The more they played the “who can play war better” game, the more I pitied anyone who lives and hopes to vote in the state of PA. And of course, the rest of the nation, that has to tolerate one of these ignorant assholes, once they get elected. But it makes it EVEN MORE annoying for me when they go on and on about how Iran is the true problem of the planet.

Speaking of everyone’s favorite and willing scapegoat, the president of Iran was on 60 minutes a few weeks back. It was a pretty funny interview, as he is a very stubborn and confusing man, but never mind what I think of Mike Wallace. (insert laughter)

No, seriously, the interview wasn’t terribly impressive. The president did the usual, speaking in a very round about, confusing manner, that allows people to read into his words and make conclusions like “he’s a halocaust denier” or “he wants to wipe Israel off the map”, both statements, which have actually been debunked (see On the Media Episode from June and the very confusing Spiegel interview i linked in June). But no doubt about it, it seems like he is too stubborn to speak in a more clear and direct manner about his opinions and plans for the country.

Regardless, throughout his many interviews in the past 6 months, one fact continues to shine through, and it is one I very much want echoed for all to hear: he is a human being that can be talked to and even… dare I say it… reasoned with! The latter being more certain. Yet the American government, regardless of party, seems obsessed with pointing fingers and making him some kind of madman. They need him to be a madman. Their last madman is currently giving long speeches in a Baghdad courtroom, they’re really hoping for a new figure to rally the country around and keep everyone nice and scared.

Now he proposed a televized debate with Bush. And yet, we don’t even need to ask, because you know Bush won’t debate him. Hell, Bush tries his best not to ever debate American politicians, nevermind the leader of Iran. And so the offer remains on the table, another sign this is NO madman. Annoying, perhaps. Conservative and a jerk, clearly. And yet, he proposes a duel of words, not a duel of weapons. But that’s not how the American government wants the story to read.. so they’ll keep pushing their version.

I guess I’ll keep pushing mine.

Law & Order in the Whitehouse – Criminal Intent

The discussion surrounding what or who has caused the United States to head in the direction it is going, is neverending and often yields little agreement. Someone always starts by saying W. Bush is the problem and once he’s replaced with a democrat things will improve. Others argue that it isn’t one person, but in fact a whole group of people running the country, who’s values and worldviews are steering it in such a way. Then of course there are those who say its the regular people who actually like what is going on and applaud all the government’s decisions over the past 6 years.

Those are only a few of the arguements I most frequently hear in the comments of this blog and elsewhere. And while I sometimes feel there is an excessive focus on Bush and his cronies, when I read about some of the administration’s actions and attempts at changing national and international law, it becomes very clear that no matter who’s fault it is, the current government in the whitehouse stands head and shoulders above any previous administration when it comes to criminal intent and attempting to ignore or abuse law.

The latest action that prompts this post was last week’s revealing that the Bush administration is trying to amend the war crimes act in order to “prevent prosecutions of US personnel for humiliating and degrading treatment of detainees in the war on terror. “ A familiar theme from the past years, the idea that US military and other secret personel who are involved in torture, they should be given a free pass and a garuntee that they will never be held accountable for having committed what is a crime according to the war crimes act of the US, not to mention international law.

I’m sure it sounds like old news. No big deal, some will say. Amazing how if they just keep doing it, changing laws or kidnapping and torturing will both become common practices that cause every newsreader in America to yawn and turn the page.

Just in case you’re somehow still unconvinced that the government and the military should have the protected right to not be subject to the war crimes act, maybe you’d like to read the Amnesty Report.

And whatever you believe to be the cause of the terrible state of affairs in the US, surely the current squatters in the white house have some significant role in it all.

bm133 Love Letters and Forgotten Secrets; The Words of Ahmadinejad

Judging by the news stories over the past few days, the US has come to accept that Iran can and should be talked with. While over the past few weeks, the Iranian president himself has been doing alot of talking, interviewing, and travelling. So what about this alleged monster as many western political leaders and media have portrayed him. We know he says some pretty contreversial things, but what else is he saying? This podcast looks into his recent words and rehashes Iran Contra, still very important it todays situation.
