Aristides de Sousa Mendes & Family

Gerald Mendes was born in Canada and raised with the story of his grandfather Aristides de Sousa Mendes. As he grew up he came to learn not only about the history of his family, but also about those that the actions of his grandfather during WWII helped to save. At a restaurant in Paris we sat down recently to talk about his family, his life experiences, and his activities related to the legacy of his grandfather.

We mention:

The Sousa Mendes Committee in France

As well as the book: Aristides de Sousa Mendes, héros “rebelle”, juin 1940 – Souvenirs et témoignages by Manuel Dias Vaz

Mark, you’re on a roll! When/what’s the next installment of your Sousa Mendes coverage? Thanks for spreading the word! Please don’t forget to tell your listeners how they can help the cause. Warmly, Olivia

Thanks again for your reporting about the legacy of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. For those who can read Portuguese, Rui Afonso’s book “Um Homem Bom” (Caminho, Lisboa) is a good place to learn more about Sousa Mendes.

There’s another book you might want to check out: “Injustica: O Caso Sousa Mendes.” This was also authored by Rui Afonso, and was published by Caminho in 1990, prior to the publication of “Um Homem Bom.”
