Over the summer I recorded podcasts documenting my parents’ lives in Portugal. In this podcast I sit with my mother here in Amsterdam and she explains what it was like moving from Portugal to Newark, New Jersey in the 70’s.

What I enjoy most about recording this series of podcasts about my family is that not only do people seem to enjoy hearing these stories, it is also great for my family as alot of these stories we haven’t told in a long time and I continue to learn details that I did not previously know.

Music:

  • Sufjan Stevens – Say Yes! To Michigan!
  • Utah Phillips – On Golden Mansions

A nice listen. Reminded me very much of the StoryCorps project which has been reported on DemocracyNow a few times. I’ve wanted to do something similar with older members of my family because despite the fact that I’ve heard lots of their stories before, I forget interesting details.

Editor’s note…. my mom would want me to head off any suggestions, not that you did, that she is old. My mom is young.

    there… took care of that!

  3. I thought you did a really nice job interviewing your mom–it’s hard to get that balance of asking questions at the right time and just letting them tell their story. On an unrelated note, your dad’s pre-teaching job of working at the electric company sounded pretty crazy.
